Description

Some cats scratch low, stretched flat along the ground rather than climbing upright. TopCat's flat sisal cat scratcher measures 16" x 16", with a hardwood frame and rough, woven sisal built to take a beating.

Features and Specifications

  • 16" x 16" square scratching surface
  • Framed in solid hardwood for rigidity
  • Covered in rough, woven sisal fabric
  • Organic catnip included, or request it without
  • Works on carpet, tile, or hardwood floors

Why Some Cats Prefer a Flat Scratcher

Horizontal scratching mimics how cats mark territory outdoors, raking claws across the ground instead of climbing. Older cats, kittens, and cats with joint pain often favor a flat cat scratcher over an upright post. Pairing it with a vertical cat scratching post covers both scratching styles.

  • Sits flush on carpet, tile, or hardwood
  • No assembly required, just unbox and place
  • Position near a favorite resting or lounging spot

  • Pairs well with a vertical post for full coverage

Customer Reviews

"The scratching post that I highly recommend is made by TopCat Products. It's sisal-covered and the fabric is very tight and well done. The post is round so it's easy for a cat to get it's paws around it and for a kitten, this makes for great climbing. Initially, you can place the post on it's side and play with your kitty as he gets used to the feel of it. I think this post is the best out there. Another thing I like about the TopCat design is that it's hollow inside. This makes for an incredible sound when the kitties scratch it. I found that my kitties come running from the far ends of the house if they hear me running my nails along the sisal."

FAQs

What cat owners ask before choosing a flat cat scratcher.

  • What is a flat cat scratcher?

A flat cat scratcher is a horizontal scratching pad, usually framed in hardwood and covered in sisal, designed for cats who scratch low instead of climbing upright.

  • Are flat cat scratchers good for cats?

Yes. They give cats a natural, low-impact scratching surface, especially helpful for kittens, seniors, or cats recovering from injury who shouldn't climb.

  • Do cats prefer flat or vertical scratchers?

It depends on the cat. Some stretch upward and prefer our sisal-base scratching post or vinyl-base scratching post; others scratch low and prefer a flat cat scratcher.

  • Where should I place a flat cat scratcher?

Put it near a window, a favorite nap spot, or wherever your cat already scratches the floor or carpet. Cats use scratchers most when they're convenient.

  • How do I get my cat to use a flat scratcher?

Sprinkle catnip on the surface and use a string toy to draw their paws across it. Avoid forcing your cat's paws onto it; let curiosity do the work.

  • Can a flat cat scratcher help protect carpets and furniture?

Yes. A dedicated horizontal surface redirects scratching away from carpets and furniture. For cats that scratch both low and upright, pair it with a vinyl-base scratching post to cover every angle.

  • How long does a flat cat scratcher last?

Most last around a year or two, depending on how often your cat uses it. A heavy scratcher may need replacing sooner than a lightly used one.
